A lot of you may already know that elephants are one of the smartest animals in the world. There are numerous research studies conducted across the world about elephant capabilities. These studies provided a lot of interesting information to understand more about Elephants’ behaviour.
The Cognitive Abilities of Elephants
Problem-Solving & Strategy
Elephants have amazing problem-solving skills. These magnificent giants learn to work as a team to achieve their goals. For example, helping each other to dig the water hole or to get the food.
Tool Use
They are tool experts! – This might sound unbelievable, but it’s true. Elephants can use tools and also learn to use them in various ways. They used a stick or a branch of leaves to scratch themselves or as a fly swatter. Some even learned to use wood put over the electric fence so they don’t get electrocuted while sneaking into the crop field or out of restricted areas.
Communication
Elephants talk beyond just the rumbles! – When you hear rumbling, trumpeting, or making a little cute noise, you know that they are talking to each other. But elephants communicate in many different ways, including making infrasonic sounds which humans can’t hear, and by using elephant body language. They also communicate by feeling the vibration that travels miles away through their feet, which allows them to prepare for incoming events.
Self-Awareness
They don’t freak out when seeing themselves in the mirror! – Just like humans, apes, dolphins, killer whales(Orcas), and Magpies – these gentle elephants recognize themselves in the mirror.
Recognizing Names
Elephants know their names! – They responded to their name when their caretaker called them. Even more surprisingly, there’s evidence suggesting that wild elephants may also have names. A new study in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution (Pardo et al., 2024) shows that wild elephants seem to use different rumbling sounds to address individuals. How incredible!

Empathy & Compassion
Empathy and compassion are always within the beautiful souls of these giants. Elephants live in a very complex social structure where they respect the elders and help others to raise the calves. The mother sometimes carries the body of her dead baby along on her journey to mourn the loss of her beloved. They also mourn when their friend dies.
Their impressive hearts extend beyond just the elephants but to other species, including humans. As keystone species, elephants create ripple effects across entire ecosystems. When they dig water holes during dry seasons, they’re creating life-saving water sources for countless other animals. Their migration routes become highways that other species follow for generations.
As a family of humans for domestic elephant in Thailand, they care about their caretakers, or mahouts, who live and grow together for a lifetime and understand each other like best friends from different species.
Conservation & The Role of Ethical Sanctuaries
However, despite their remarkable intelligence, these magnificent animals are facing an alarming risk of extinction. Both the Asian Elephant and the African Elephant are classified as endangered species by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, primarily due to rapid decreases in their numbers. That’s why understanding the threats to elephants and the importance of conservation efforts matter.
